Procedure for Placing Telescope Base onto the Pier in Observatory

The base is assembled as a unit with its oil pads, lower skirt, slewing ring, and other such equipment for shipping to the site. It is shipped on an 8-ft-square pallet with various parts and equipment for assembly. Equipment expected with the base is three levelling jacks, the oil-return line, the attachment for the central pivot bearing, and the main parts of the base skirt.

  1. Take the three levelling jacks and put them on the 1-inch attachment screws in the pier, orienting them so you can get at their adjusting screws once the base is lowered into place. Use shims to get tops of jacks to the same height, if necessary.
  2. Attach three 6-ft slings to the lifting eyes in the inside of the base (in the access room). Attach the other ends of the slings to a hook on the crane.
  3. Use the crane to lift the base unit and place it on the levelling jacks with the screw rods through the holes in the lower ring of the base. Make sure the RING TO CONNECT THE SLEWING RING AND CENTRAL PIVOT IS INSIDE BASE at this point. Secure the base with three sets of 1-inch washers and nuts.
  4. Use a precision level (which we have bought for this project) on the top edge of the slewing ring to level the base to +/- 30 arcsec. Tighten nuts to attach base permanently to the pier and recheck the level. Caulk between the bottom of the base and the pier to eliminate air infiltration.
  5. Attach oil input and return lines. Hook up the lights and power plugs on interior of the base.
  6. Put plexiglass pads in place and check function of the oil system.
